On Sunday, January 29, 2023, four adult males, three adult females, one boy child, and one girl child were killed in the Ojuelegba truck accident, while one adult female was rescued alive.

A truck transporting a 20-foot container collided with a commercial bus.

Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said investigations revealed that the bus was picking up passengers when the truck lost control and fell over the side of the bridge.

“After suspending the container load with the aid of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment, a single adult woman was extricated alive and taken to the trauma center.

“Final casualty count is 9 fatalities comprising 4 adult males, 3 adult females, one boy child and one girl child. One adult female was rescued alive.

On the ground are the Agency’s heavy-duty Goliath and teams from Onipan and Cappa. This situation has now been resolved by the Agency’s Ambulance, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and Nigeria Police.

The Nigeria Police will conduct additional investigation into the removal of the barriers on the bridge that prevent trucks from ascending.
