A young Nigerian man has shared the reality that hit him after telling his family he had secured a new job and started earning a monthly salary.
According to the man, identified on X as @Themrbachelor, his mother called to congratulate him even before he received his first paycheck. However, the congratulatory message came with an unexpected responsibility.
During the call, she informed him that his younger brother needed ₦30,000 for textbooks and assured the boy not to worry because his “big brother now works in a big company.”
When his first salary eventually arrived, reality set in. He revealed that about 70 percent of the money went into family expenses, forcing him to survive the rest of the month on low-budget meals while trekking to save transport costs.
Hoping his mother would understand his financial struggles, he later explained his situation to her. Instead, she reportedly burst into laughter.
Reflecting on the experience, he joked that he sat alone in his room staring at his empty pot and wondering how he had somehow become a millionaire in his family’s imagination.
