A woman has sparked conversations online after revealing how her family abandoned plans for a shawarma dinner and instead used the money to refill their cooking gas.
According to her, their cooking gas finished the previous night just as she and her children were craving shawarma. Seeing the situation, her husband suggested buying shawarma and drinks for the entire family as dinner.
Before making the purchase, however, she decided to calculate the total cost for a household of five.
After doing the math, she discovered that buying shawarma and drinks for everyone would cost more than ₦35,000.
She then compared the amount with the cost of refilling a 12kg cylinder of cooking gas, which she said currently sells for about ₦24,000 and would last the family for at least four weeks.
Explaining her decision, she wrote:
“Gas finished last night and the kids were craving shawarma, I was too. Hubby said to go out to get it for all of us with drinks for dinner, I punched my calculator to see how much it will cost for a family of 5. I arrived at over 35k. 12kg gas now cost 24k, we would use it 4 weeks at least. I chose gas over shawarma.”
She noted that the decision reflects the financial reality many families face today, even in households where both parents are employed.
The post has since generated discussion online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences of having to prioritize essential household expenses over occasional treats amid rising living costs.
