A woman has shared a heartbreaking account of a colleague who was kidnapped while returning home from work earlier this year and later died by suicide just weeks after being released.
The story, which has circulated widely on social media in Nigeria, highlights the emotional and financial impact the ordeal reportedly had on the victim, her family, friends, and co-workers.
According to the narrator, the kidnappers initially demanded a large ransom, forcing the victim’s family into weeks of negotiations before a reduced amount was agreed upon.
She explained that relatives, friends, and well-wishers contributed money and even secured loans in a desperate effort to raise the funds needed for the woman’s release.
“The parents ran from place to place to gather the ransom after negotiations reduced the demand. Family members and friends contributed what they could until the money was raised,” she recounted.
The colleague further claimed that after her release, the victim revealed that she had endured severe abuse while in captivity, leaving her deeply traumatised.
According to the account, the emotional burden became overwhelming in the days following her return home.
“She told us about the conditions she endured while being held. Two weeks after she came back, we lost her,” the narrator said.
The story has reignited conversations about insecurity, trauma recovery, and the need for stronger support systems for kidnapping survivors.
Many Nigerians reacting online have called for improved security measures, better victim support services, and increased access to mental health care for survivors of violent crimes.
While the claims contained in the social media post remain independently unverified, the account has generated widespread sympathy and renewed concern about the long-term psychological effects of kidnapping and other traumatic experiences.
