A woman has shared on X how a family dispute over bride price demands allegedly led to the cancellation of a long-term engagement, sparking widespread debate online.
According to her account, the couple had been together since their university days and were preparing to formalize their relationship. However, tensions arose when the bride’s family reportedly introduced additional marriage requirements, including a demand that the groom purchase a piece of land in the village for his future in-laws.
The woman claimed that her cousin, the prospective groom, said he could not afford the land purchase alongside the other expenses listed for the marriage rites. As a result, he decided to end the engagement.
Sharing the story online, she wrote:
“My cousin ended his engagement with his fiancée because her bride price request was crazy.
They have been together since university days, and she lost her virginity to him.
The issue is that the girl’s father wants him to buy a land in the village for the in-laws before the engagement can take place.
He said he can’t afford that amongst the other expenses on the list.
Now the girl’s family is saying he has to marry her or make her a virgin again as she told her parents she lost it to him.
It is the matter we are dealing with o.
Is it a must he marries her??”
The post quickly gained traction on social media, attracting mixed reactions from users.
While some argued that marriage requirements and bride price expectations should be realistic and mutually agreed upon, others maintained that families are entitled to uphold their cultural traditions and conditions.
Several commenters also expressed concern about the emotional and psychological impact such disputes can have on couples and their families, particularly when relationships spanning many years come to an abrupt end.
The incident has reignited discussions about the balance between cultural expectations, financial realities, and personal choice in modern marriage arrangements.
