Oyo Government Suspends School Excursions Over Security Fears After Abduction Attack

The Oyo State Government has suspended all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and every other activity outside school premises across the state following rising security concerns.

The decision comes after last week’s coordinated abduction attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where several students and teachers were reportedly kidnapped and are still said to be in captivity.

According to a circular dated May 22, 2026, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs B.T. Oyinloye, all school administrators were directed to immediately halt activities that require students to leave school premises.

The government also announced that every previous approval granted for excursions and external school events has been cancelled until the security situation improves.

Part of the circular read:

In view of the recent security concerns, the Ministry is taking steps to safeguard the lives of students and members of staff in all schools in Oyo State.”

It further stated:

The safety of our children is non-negotiable and takes precedence over all academic and extracurricular activities. This directive takes immediate effect and will be reviewed as soon as the security situation improves.”

The directive has already been distributed to education authorities, principals, head teachers, and school administrators across the state as concerns continue to grow over the safety of students and teachers.

The move follows heightened tension after the deadly school abduction incident in the Ogbomoso axis of Oyo State, which sparked widespread fear among parents and residents.
