A woman has ignited widespread reactions online after sharing how her mother-in-law intervened in her marriage just two weeks after her wedding, advising her against taking on unequal domestic responsibilities.
The viral story has stirred discussions on gender roles, household duties, and evolving expectations in modern marriages.
According to the woman, her mother-in-law visited shortly after the wedding, having missed the ceremony due to travel issues. Their relationship quickly grew cordial, but tensions arose when her husband reportedly questioned her about laundry in a dismissive manner.
“We were inside her room when my husband came in asking about his clothes. I went to look for them, but when I returned, she asked why I allow him talk to me like that. She said, ‘You’re doing his laundry and he still can’t look for his clothes himself? What are you, a maid?’” the woman recounted.
The mother-in-law continued:
“She pulled me close and said, ‘Don’t let him turn you into his house girl. Since I got married, I’ve never done your father-in-law’s laundry; instead, he does mine. If he can’t appreciate your effort, let him wash and fold himself.’ That was the last time I did his laundry, and now he even does mine.”
