A Nigerian man, Amb Chris Iyama, has shared a chilling account of how he was abducted by suspected kidnappers in Plateau State and forced to endure days of hardship in the forest before regaining his freedom.
Iyama said the incident occurred on March 8, 2026, shortly after he returned to his residence in Rayfield, Jos. According to him, armed men ambushed him at his gate and whisked him away into the bush, where he was made to trek for hours across forests, rivers, and mountainous terrain while blindfolded and restrained.
The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ₦100 million ransom and issued a 12-hour ultimatum to his contacts. Following intense negotiations, he was eventually released on Tuesday night after a reduced ransom was paid in a remote forest area around Bokkos.
Recounting his ordeal, Iyama described how what began as a joyful evening quickly turned into a nightmare.
He had earlier visited the family of a late professor to celebrate his assistant’s admission into the Nigerian Law School. However, on returning home later that night, he was ambushed at his gate by armed men.
Sensing danger, he initially attempted to escape and hid in a gutter within his compound, but the attackers found him, beat him, and forced him at gunpoint into the forest.
“They shouted at me to step out of the car with my hands up. The next thing I heard was gunshots, and that was when it dawned on me that they were kidnappers,” he said.
Iyama revealed that he was forced to walk for nearly 48 hours with little rest, food, or clean water. At some point, his captors blindfolded him and tied his hands using his own necktie.
During the ordeal, he was made to call a close associate, who then became the point of contact for ransom negotiations.
“They told him ₦100 million or nothing, and it must be provided within 12 hours or they would kill me,” he recounted.
He described moments of extreme exhaustion and fear, saying he was beaten repeatedly and even faced the threat of execution.
Despite the trauma, Iyama said he found strength in faith, revealing that prayers from family, friends, and members of his church sustained him throughout the experience.
“I started speaking under my breath, confessing the word of God over my life. I said I would not die by their bullets or knives,” he said.
According to him, widespread prayer support was mobilized globally, including from his church community and several affiliated organizations, while negotiations for his release were ongoing.
He was eventually freed late Tuesday night after the agreed ransom was delivered in a forest location.
Iyama is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Jos, where he is recovering from both physical injuries and psychological trauma.
He expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal, insisting that divine intervention played a key role in saving his life.
“I died many times between Sunday and Tuesday night but came back to life because God said I’m special… I will fulfill my destiny in the land of the living,” he added.
The incident has once again highlighted ongoing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where cases of kidnapping and banditry continue to pose serious threats to residents.
