A Nigerian woman has sparked widespread reactions online after revealing how she quietly built a successful tailoring business while enduring years of ridicule from her husband.
The woman, who runs a home-based tailoring outfit, shared her story on Facebook, explaining that her husband often mocked her for dropping out of university and being naturally quiet.
According to her, he regularly treated her as though she lacked intelligence.
“This man I married looked me in the eye every day and believed I had no sense. Just because I dropped out of university and I’m always quiet, he used to talk to me like I was a house girl,” she wrote.
She said he would make dismissive remarks such as telling her to “stay in her lane” and suggesting that all she knew how to do was sew clothes and watch Indian movies.
Despite the constant belittling, the woman said she chose not to argue with him. Instead, she focused on growing her tailoring business.
For years, she quietly sewed ankara, lace, and ready-to-wear outfits from home. Her big break came when she posted some of her work on Instagram, where a Nigerian fashion designer based in the United States noticed her craftsmanship.
According to her, the designer was impressed by the finishing on her outfits and reached out to collaborate. Since then, the two have been working together, with the woman sewing the pieces in Nigeria and sending them abroad for sale.
“I send her the pieces, she sells them over there, and she pays me in dollars. Sometimes actual dollars,” she said.
Meanwhile, her husband remained unaware of how far the business had grown. He believed she was only sewing clothes for neighbours in their estate and earning small amounts.
The woman said she quietly saved the income in a separate bank account opened under her maiden name. Through the same connection, she also began processing a new passport and visa.
The situation took another turn when she recently discovered she was two months pregnant. According to her, she is unsure whether her husband is the father, noting that they had not had children together throughout their marriage.
She revealed that she has now moved out of their home and is staying with her elder cousin.
“I left him with his pride and TV remote,” she wrote.
She recounted that her husband called her after noticing she had left, demanding to know where she had gone and how she could afford to move out.
Rather than arguing, she said she simply laughed.
The woman explained that she could no longer remain in a marriage where her silence was constantly mistaken for foolishness.
“I didn’t fight. I didn’t shout. I just faced my work and used my brain. Let him sit in that house and think about how the ‘area tailor’ outsmarted him with needle and thread.”
However, she ended her post by seeking advice from the public after revealing her pregnancy.
“I am 33 years old. Should I keep this baby? Please advise me,” she asked.
