A former bank teller has shared a troubling experience about how a woman almost fell victim to an online scam after believing she had won ₦30 million.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the man recalled that while working at the bank, a woman and her daughter came to deposit ₦100,000, insisting the transaction was urgent.
According to him, he processed the payment quickly and issued a receipt. However, about 30 minutes later, the woman returned with another ₦100,000 deposit, again stressing that it was urgent.
Roughly an hour later, the woman showed up for the third time with another ₦100,000 and attempted to skip the queue to make the deposit immediately.
The repeated deposits raised suspicion, prompting the teller to stop her and demand an explanation before proceeding with the transaction.
He said the woman initially avoided answering his questions, but her daughter eventually revealed what was really happening.
According to the daughter, the woman had received an email claiming she had won ₦30 million and was instructed to keep sending money to “clear” the supposed prize.
The teller added that the woman had been borrowing money from different places in order to continue sending the payments.
He also noted that the woman was a school teacher, pointing out that even educated people can fall victim to scams when emotions and expectations cloud their judgment.
The teller wrote:
“When I worked as a bank teller, a woman came with her daughter to deposit ₦100,000. She said it was very urgent, so I posted it quickly and gave her the receipt.
30 minutes later she returned with another ₦100,000. Same urgency.
An hour later she came again trying to jump the queue with another ₦100,000.
That was when I stopped her and asked what the money was for, or I won’t post the cash.
At first she lied, but her daughter later told me the truth.
She received a mail she won ₦30 million, and they asked her to pay to ‘clear’ the money.
She kept borrowing money everywhere to send.
The woman was a teacher. Educated.
Greed can make people stop thinking.”
The story has sparked reactions online, with many social media users warning others to be cautious of emails or messages claiming they have won large sums of money.
