A video showing the interrogation and sentencing of a young man identified as Ayuba has sparked widespread discussion online after he was reportedly sentenced to two years in prison for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
Distressing Footage Emerges
The footage, which runs for 1 minute and 27 seconds, shows Ayuba sitting on the floor, visibly distressed, as he answers questions from an interrogator.
Speaking in broken English, he identifies himself and mentions associates named Lashif, Azim, and Mohammed, who he says worked nearby performing cleaning and manual labor.
When questioned about the alleged theft, Ayuba appeared confused and repeatedly insisted that he did not carry a bag. Moments later, he was informed of his sentence.
In disbelief, Ayuba asked, “Why jail?” before confirming that he had been sentenced to two years in prison. Despite his shock, he repeatedly thanked God, saying, “Thank God, thank God,” and explained that he hoped to return to his mother’s side after serving his sentence.
Social Media Reacts
The video quickly went viral, sparking strong reactions from Nigerians online. Many questioned the severity of the punishment, arguing that imprisonment for a minor offense was excessive. Some suggested alternatives such as community service or rehabilitation.
Others highlighted inequalities in the justice system, noting that poor offenders often face harsh public punishments while wealthier individuals accused of larger crimes frequently escape similar consequences.
Conversations Around Justice and Punishment
While opinions remain divided, Ayuba’s case has reignited discussions about:
The proportionality of punishments in Nigeria
The treatment of young offenders
The broader fairness of the legal system
The incident has left many questioning whether the justice system adequately balances accountability with compassion.
