A Nigerian woman has shared a chilling account of what she described as a frightening encounter at an international airport after returning to the country from abroad.
What was supposed to be a routine arrival reportedly turned tense when a group of men approached her at the arrivals area, claiming they recognised her from social media.
According to her narration, the incident happened after a series of flight delays. Upon landing, she contacted her driver, who arrived at the airport to pick her up. However, things took an uncomfortable turn when she noticed that some men loitering around the area seemed familiar with the driver and began moving closer to her.
Recounting the experience, she said the men greeted her, insisting they knew her online. One of them attempted to carry her luggage, but she declined.
“They said they knew me from social media and greeted me. One of them carried my box, but I told him no because there is no free help in Nigeria,” she said.
She explained that the situation escalated once they reached the parked car.
“Immediately I wanted to sit down, one of them held my handbag and said, ‘Do something for us now.’”
According to her, the men surrounded the vehicle, blocking both sides, while her driver appeared to deliberately stall and pretended not to notice what was happening.
In a bid to resolve the situation quickly, she offered ₦5,000, but the men reportedly rejected the offer and demanded foreign currency instead.
“The man was holding my bag and looking inside. He was pointing at my pocket saying, ‘Mama, see dollar there. Mama, see.’ They collected 100 yuan and about 1,500 Mauritian rupees. They said they don’t take naira,” she narrated.
The story has since gone viral, sparking outrage and concern online. Many Nigerians took to social media to share similar experiences, particularly at airports across the country.
One commenter wrote, “This is exactly why I panic anytime I land in Nigeria.”
Another added, “How can people be begging and still be choosing currency? This is embarrassing.”
The incident has reignited conversations around passenger safety, extortion, and the need for stricter security and regulation at Nigerian airports.
