A Nigerian lady has ignited intense conversations on social media after making a blunt claim about why many men prefer so-called “independent women” in relationships.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Teniola, the woman argued that the preference is often driven less by admiration or respect and more by financial convenience.
According to her, some men deliberately seek out women who earn their own income because it makes it easier to borrow money from them.
In her words, she said:
“The reason why men want an independent woman is to borrow money from them. There’s no woman I know that hasn’t borrowed a guy money.”
Her statement quickly gained traction online, triggering widespread debate across social media platforms. Many women agreed with her stance, sharing personal experiences of financially supporting partners who later felt entitled to their money.
However, others strongly disagreed, arguing that independence should not be reduced to financial exploitation or unhealthy relationship dynamics.
Reacting to the video, one user wrote, “Not all men, but some definitely feel entitled to women’s money.” Another commented, “Being independent doesn’t mean being a loan bank.”
As the video continues to trend, it has reopened broader discussions around money, gender roles, financial boundaries, and expectations in modern relationships.
