A Nigerian lady has ignited widespread debate on social media after calling for the complete abolition of bride price in Nigeria, describing the tradition as outdated and harmful to women.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @mazichinonso, the woman argued that bride price has been grossly abused and now encourages the treatment of women as property rather than partners in marriage.
According to her, many men believe that once they pay a woman’s bride price, they have effectively “bought” her, giving them control over her life and decisions. She also accused some parents of prioritising money over their daughters’ wellbeing by demanding excessive bride prices.
“Bride price needs to be cancelled in Nigeria. Let them ban it,” she said.
“A lot of men think because they paid bride price, they have acquired the girl as property. And a lot of parents that use bride price to sell away their children need to be stopped.”
Questioning the logic behind the practice, the lady revealed that in her community, bride price is as low as ₦5,000, yet some families inflate the cost based on their financial status.
She further linked the tradition to abuse in marriages, stressing that women are not commodities.
“Some men marry these girls and start treating them like property. A woman is not your property. So if you pay my father ₦5,000, you will start treating me like property? Is it ₦5,000 they used to train me?” she asked.
Concluding her argument, she insisted that bride price has lost its original cultural meaning and now does more harm than good. According to her, banning the practice entirely would help protect women’s dignity, rights, and safety within marriage.
The video has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians supporting her stance while others defend bride price as an important cultural tradition that only needs reform—not abolition.
