“Criticizing Poor Governance Is Not Hatred” — Nigerian Man Slams NNPC Over Fuel Price Disparity

A Nigerian man has sparked conversation online after lamenting the rising cost of fuel sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), questioning why a government-owned entity would sell petrol at a higher price than private marketers.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @ChuksEricE, the man expressed frustration over what he described as the misinterpretation of citizens’ demands for good governance. According to him, Nigerians are often accused of hating the government simply for pointing out obvious shortcomings.

He highlighted the price difference in petrol sales, noting that NNPC outlets sell fuel at ₦800 and above per litre, while MRS Oil, a privately owned company created strictly for profit, reportedly sells at ₦730 per litre.

“When we ask for Nigeria to be governed very well, people will think we hate the government,” he said, arguing that the situation makes little sense given that NNPC is owned by the government and should, in theory, prioritize citizens’ welfare over profit.

The video has since generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing his concerns and questioning the role of government institutions in easing the economic burden on citizens, especially amid rising living costs and fuel price hikes.
