Five petrol tankers caught fire in Kano State on Tuesday, according to the Kano State Fire Service.
According to the agency, the tragic incident occurred in Kano’s Farawa Kwanar Yashi neighborhood.
The fire was said to have started in an unfinished building used as a diesel storage area and quickly spread to five tankers carrying 20,400 litres of diesel.
The State Fire Service spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, told reporters that the inferno was caused by a portable generator used to upload diesel from diesel tankers to other surface tanks.
He stated that three people were trapped in the tragic incident, but that they were all rescued alive and taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to Abdullahi, the agency’s control room received an emergency call from a staff member who reported the outbreak at Kangon Saminu Farawa by Kwanar Yashi Maiduguri Road, and their men arrived at 00:29 hrs.
“When they arrived, they discovered an unfinished building of approximately 200 x 200 ft used as a diesel storage area, approximately five diesel tankers containing approximately 20,400 litres of diesel, one machine Lifan, and three portable generators were ablaze.”
“With the help of our men, we successfully managed the situation, saving three diesel tankers, nine surface tanks, and preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings.
“Three trapped victims, Mai Daura Sadi, 24 years old, Hassan Sadi, about 25 years old, and Iliyasu Sadi, about 25 years old, were all rescued alive,” he added.
