A woman has sparked a heated discussion online after questioning why it’s assumed that women must change their surnames when they get married.
She argued that marriage is meant to be a union of two individuals coming together as equals, not a situation where one person’s identity is erased.
“Tradition doesn’t make something fair or sensible,” she said. “If a woman wants to take her husband’s name, that’s her choice—but it shouldn’t be expected by default.”
She explained that the practice of women adopting their husband’s surname has historical roots in a time when women were seen as extensions of their husbands, rather than independent individuals.
Her post quickly drew a wide range of reactions on social media, with users debating whether the tradition is outdated or should remain.
