As the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, holds its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, there is a palpable fear of a new round of strikes in Nigerian public universities.
The meeting began yesterday, Saturday, November 3, and is still ongoing at the time of filing this report.
ASUU has been embroiled in a labor dispute with the Nigerian government over unfulfilled promises and the government’s continued refusal to pay its members the eight-month withheld salaries from the Union’s previous strike.
Remember that the Union called off its eight-month strike on October 14, 2022, thanks to the intervention of House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.
However, the government insisted on implementing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy for the period the university workers were away from their duty posts.
Meanwhile, ASUU issued a directive to its members last week to protest the issue of eight months of unpaid wages.
ASUU members from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the University of Ibadan (UI) joined the protest to press their demands.
