Man alleges LUTH patient passed away after nurse let wife feed him against orders

A Nigerian man described a tragic event at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where a fellow patient died as a result of suspected medical malpractice.

The man, who went by @LaceVine on social media site X (formerly Twitter), revealed that the patient in the bed next to his passed away from suffocation after a nurse allegedly gave the man’s wife permission to feed him in spite of medical advice that forbade oral feeding.

He reported that shortly after being fed pap, the patient started having trouble breathing.

The wife called for assistance in alarm, but the nurse allegedly ignored her for ten minutes or so. It was already too late when she became aware of how serious the situation was.

While I was at LUTH, the person next to my bed died of suffocation because of the nurse’s negligence,” @LaceVine wrote. “The man wasn’t meant to eat yet, but the nurse gave the wife the go-ahead to feed him pap. He began experiencing breathing difficulties, and the wife called the nurse, but she was grumbling.”

She didn’t respond until after 10 minutes when she saw it was serious. They began looking for suction catheters but couldn’t find any. Right in front of me, the man passed away.”

He further claimed that all of the on-duty nurses, including the matron, hastily changed their clothes and fled when the patient’s relatives showed up.

The heartfelt post provoked strong reactions, with many users venting their anger and sharing similar stories of purported hospital negligence in the comment section.
