Nigerian Woman Advocates for Flexible Childbirth Positions After Personal Experience

A Nigerian lady, Miracle Oluchukwu Simon, has sparked discussion online after sharing her childbirth experience and calling for more flexibility in delivery positions for pregnant women. Her story, shared on Facebook, sheds light on the physical challenges many women face during labour.

Challenges with Standard Delivery Beds

Miracle revealed that during her first childbirth, using the hospital delivery bed was extremely uncomfortable and made pushing difficult. She said:

When I was in labour and wanted to give birth, the midwife asked me to climb on top the delivery bed. I begged her to let me lie on the floor and give birth because I found it difficult to use the delivery bed.”

Preference for Alternative Positions

During her second pregnancy, Miracle delivered on the floor, which she found much easier and less stressful. She explained:

During my first pregnancy, I used the bed and it was very uncomfortable and difficult for me to push out my baby. In my second pregnancy, I lay on the floor and it was very easy and comfortable for me to deliver my baby.”

Healthcare Rigidity

Despite her comfort with alternative positions, the midwife insisted she return to the delivery bed during her most recent labour. Miracle lamented:

So, I begged the midwife to allow me to stay on the floor and give birth, but she refused. Climbing on top of that bed when labour is intense is very difficult, and even lying down while giving birth is not easy at all.”

Advocacy for Patient Choice

Miracle used her experience to advocate for pregnant women to have more say in choosing delivery positions that suit their comfort and physical needs. She noted:

“I wish they would ask pregnant women the position they prefer to give birth. Squatting is the best for me abeg. Imagine laying down to push a whole human being, but at the end of the day, God made it easy for me.”

Encouragement for Expectant Mothers

She also offered words of encouragement to other expectant mothers:

“To every pregnant woman, God will make it easier for you on your delivery day amen…”

Her story has since generated widespread reactions online, with many women sharing similar experiences and reigniting conversations about maternal comfort and autonomy in childbirth.
