A lady has sparked mixed reactions online after revealing why she refused to contribute ₦20,000 for a friend’s wedding aso ebi.
According to her, she only found out about her friend’s engagement and upcoming August wedding through TikTok, rather than hearing the news directly from the bride. Despite feeling left out, she said she congratulated her friend and chose not to make an issue out of it.
However, things took a different turn when she later received a WhatsApp message requesting ₦20,000 for aso ebi. She initially considered making the payment until she noticed that the same message, complete with account details, had also been forwarded to her aunt.
Feeling excluded from the wedding preparations but still expected to contribute financially, she decided against sending the money.
Sharing her experience, she wrote:
“You did introduction, didn’t tell me, I saw it on TikTok, still said congrats. Wedding in August, you told everyone but me. I no vex. Then you sent ‘Aso ebi ₦20,000’ to my WhatsApp. I said okay. Next thing, you sent it to my aunt + account details… I just laugh in isiZulu because I no go send you kobo. Congrats in advance my dear.”
Her post has since fueled debate online, with many social media users divided over whether friends should be personally informed about major life events before being asked to contribute toward wedding expenses.
Reactions
@AdebayoWrites: “You can’t skip me for the announcement and remember me only when it’s time to pay. Friendship doesn’t work like that.”
@NenyeSpeaks: “She’s not wrong. If I’m important enough to sponsor your aso ebi, I should be important enough to hear the news from you first.”
@MideOfficial: “Nobody is entitled to a personal wedding announcement. If you don’t want to pay, simply decline and move on.”
@ChiomaCares: “Aso ebi has become a fundraising scheme for some weddings. People should stop feeling pressured to contribute.”
@KingTee: “The funniest part is sending the same payment message to her aunt too. That really made it look like a mass donation drive.”
