Fleeing Lagos buttock-enlargement doctor now in custody — Police

Idara Bassey, a medical doctor from Lagos State, was taken into police custody after being declared wanted in relation to the death of a 36-year-old patient following a buttock enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.

The State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti is currently looking into Bassey’s case, as our correspondent learned on Tuesday from Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the state police.

Bassey had previously fled after Abiola died during a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic on August 26, 2024.

In order to increase the buttocks’ fullness and give them a rounder appearance, a cosmetic surgery procedure called the Brazilian Butt Lift involves injecting fat from other organs into the buttocks.

Many medical professionals have issued warnings regarding the procedure’s possible risks, especially in light of Melissa Kerr’s death in 2019 at the Medicana Kadikoy Hospital in Istanbul during a similar surgery. Melissa Kerr was a 31-year-old British woman.

According to a report from 2023, the deceased was not provided with adequate information to evaluate the risks associated with the BBL surgery before traveling to have it done.

Further videos of women, mostly from Lagos, claiming to have successfully had the enlargement procedure have surfaced online despite warnings about its risks.

The owner of the clinic became a suspect in the case after the late 36-year-old vanished, even though the police informed our correspondent that the nurse who gave her the injection had been taken into custody.

Abiola had visited the clinic for the buttock enlargement procedure, which tragically ended in her death after a nurse, allegedly acting under Bassey’s orders, administered an injection.

Earlier, she had left her home in the Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in the Ibeju Lekki area and directed her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.

AAbiola lost consciousness and started having breathing difficulties after the nurse allegedly gave her the injection per the doctor’s orders, according to the driver who brought her to the clinic and reported to the police.

The doctor is currently with the SCID, according to Hundeyin, who was contacted on Tuesday to inquire about the status of the investigation.

When asked if Bassey would be charged and under what circumstances, he responded that information would be released “after the investigation.”
