Banks are stockpiling new Naira notes ahead of the elections next month – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker, has claimed that banks are stockpiling redesigned Naira notes for politicians in the February elections.

The scarcity of new notes has sparked outrage across the country, as banks continue to accept old notes despite the approaching deadline.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, which had previously directed that the old notes be phased out on January 31, had urged customers to convince banks to accept the new notes.

Customers have yet to access the notes in banks, despite the fact that the deadline is less than 11 days away.

In a tweet on Saturday, Shehu Sani claimed that politicians are conspiring with banks to hoard new notes for the February election.

According to him, the banks’ refusal to release the notes undermined the ultimate goal of the redesigning.

He wrote, “Banks are hoarding the new currency from the public with the intent of making it available for politicians next month to be able to buy votes.

“The ultimate aim of redesigning the national currency is defeated”.
