The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) announced on Thursday that it would sanction fuel stations that did not accept bank transfers or POS machines at their outlets.
Kimchi Apollo, NMDPRA’s General Manager, Corporate Communications and Stakeholders Management, stated this in an Abuja statement.
According to Apollo, the retail outlets’ actions were motivated by the recent cash crunch caused by the new Naira design.
In part, the statement read, “It has come to the attention of the NMDPRA that some retail outlets are not accepting the use of POS machines at their fueling stations due to the recent cash crunch brought about by the new Naira
“The authority frowns at this recent behavior, which is causing untold hardship for Nigerians at a time when all hands should be on deck to assist the government in the transition to the new Naira.”
To alleviate customer suffering, Apollo instructed all retail outlets to ensure the free use of bank transfers and POS for the sale of petroleum products.
General Manager stated that the authority and security agencies would be present at retail outlets to enforce compliance with the instruction and that those who did not comply would be sanctioned.
