A Nigerian man has shared an emotional story of how a routine check on the school fees of his late friend’s children uncovered a painful misunderstanding and a family dispute.
According to him, he has taken responsibility for the children’s education since his friend passed away three years ago. Despite his own financial struggles, he said he made a personal promise to support them and has continued paying their school fees.
However, he became worried after someone informed him that the children’s mother had allegedly been inflating the fees. The concern grew when the widow later contacted him about an outstanding balance, which he eventually paid after asking her to remind him.
Wanting to confirm the situation for himself, the man contacted the children’s school directly to request a breakdown of the fees for each class.
To his surprise, the school’s records showed that the widow had not inflated the fees. Instead, he had been underpaying by about ₦17,000.
He said he arranged a meeting with the woman and asked why she had not told him the exact amount required. She reportedly explained that the school fees had increased, but she chose not to mention it because she believed he was already doing enough for the children.
The man then revealed that the allegation against her came from her elder sister, who lives with them. He reportedly showed her the phone number, time of contact and the message he received as evidence.
According to him, the widow broke down in tears and could not say much after learning who had spread the claim.
He expressed disappointment that someone would create such suspicion against a struggling mother who was already trying to manage her children’s needs.
After confirming the correct amount, he immediately paid the outstanding difference.
