Man Ends Friendship After Friend Refuses ₦50k Loan But Spends ₦145k on Girlfriend Same Day

A man has sparked debate online after sharing an experience that led him to end a friendship over what he described as misplaced priorities.

According to his account, the incident happened two years ago when he was facing financial difficulties and approached a close friend for a ₦50,000 loan.

The friend reportedly told him he was broke and had no money to lend.

However, while they were still together, the friend’s girlfriend and her younger sister arrived. The friend then suggested that all of them go out for a meal.

At the restaurant, everyone ordered food, while the girlfriend and her sister also requested takeaways. The total bill reportedly came to about ₦100,000, which the friend paid without hesitation.

After the outing, the girlfriend allegedly asked for money to make her hair, and the friend immediately transferred ₦45,000 to her.

Surprised by what he had witnessed, the man said he later reminded his friend about the ₦50,000 loan request.

According to him, the friend replied:

“How can you be asking me for that kind of money after I’ve spent so much today? I already told you I don’t have it.”

The man said he left immediately after hearing the response and never visited the friend again.

The story has since generated mixed reactions online, with many arguing that the issue was not about a lack of money but about where the friend chose to spend it. Others maintained that nobody is obligated to lend money and that people have the right to decide how their money is used.

Reactions

“He wasn’t broke. He simply didn’t want to lend you the money.”

“People are free to spend their money however they like, but they should be honest about it.”

“The painful part is not the refusal; it’s watching him spend almost three times the amount you requested.”

“A loan is not an entitlement. If he didn’t want to give it, that’s his choice.”

“That friendship ended the moment he chose excuses instead of telling the truth.”

“This is why many friendships become strained when money gets involved.”
