A Nigerian lady has sparked widespread reactions on social media after sharing how she challenged officials at her younger brother’s school over an additional ₦2,000 POS charge attached to a ₦200,000 school fees payment.
According to her account, the incident occurred when she visited the school to pay her brother’s fees and was informed that she would have to pay an extra ₦2,000 because the payment would be processed through a POS machine.
The woman said she immediately questioned the arrangement, wondering why a school that collects hundreds of thousands of naira in fees would not have a properly functioning payment system of its own.
She further claimed that the vice principal informed her that the school’s official POS machine was not working and that the available machine belonged to a teacher, hence the additional charge.
Uncomfortable with the explanation, she insisted on transparency and accountability before proceeding with the transaction.
Sharing the experience online, she wrote:
“I went to my brother’s school this morning to pay his school fees, ₦200k. Tell me why the vice principal said I should add ₦2k for POS charges. I asked her how a school collecting that kind of money doesn’t have a proper working POS.”
After making the payment, the situation allegedly took another turn when she requested an official receipt.
According to her, school officials initially claimed that there was no receipt paper available and told her that the receipt would be given to her brother at a later date.
However, she refused to leave without proof of payment.
“After payment, I requested for receipt and this woman suddenly said, ‘The receipt paper has finished, I will give it to your brother later.’ I said, ‘Madam, I’m not leaving this school without my receipt. ₦200k is not beans in this economy.’ That was how receipt paper magically appeared.”
Her post quickly gained traction online, with many Nigerians praising her for standing her ground and demanding proper documentation. Others noted that parents and guardians should always insist on receipts for large transactions, especially when dealing with schools and other institutions.
The incident has also reignited discussions about hidden charges, unofficial fees, and accountability concerns in some private schools, with many social media users calling for greater transparency in payment processes.
