A lady has narrated how a simple act of goodwill at her workplace turned into an expensive digital shock after a colleague allegedly exhausted her mobile data without permission.
According to her, the incident happened around 8:47am in March 2026 after the colleague requested access to her laptop hotspot, claiming he only needed it for “just five minutes” because his personal subscription had finished.
Trusting him, she agreed, not expecting what would happen before midday.
By about 11am, she said she received a notification from her network provider informing her that her entire 40GB data bundle had been used up.
Shocked by the sudden depletion, she checked her system activity and allegedly discovered that the colleague had been downloading multiple seasons of a television series in high definition while at work.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw he was downloading seasons one to seven of a series in HD. This was in the office, on my data, after he told me it would be for just five minutes,” she said.
She explained that the experience was particularly painful due to the increasing cost of internet subscriptions and the fact that the incident occurred in a professional environment.
“When I complained, he simply said, ‘Ah ah, you should’ve told me it was finishing na’. At that point, I was speechless. How was I supposed to know?” she added.
The lady also recalled a similar situation in 2022 involving another colleague who exceeded agreed data usage but later apologised and compensated her.
However, she said this latest experience raised concerns about boundaries, accountability, and proper digital etiquette in shared workplaces.

“40GB gone before 11am? That person came prepared.”
“The painful part is the response he gave after finishing the data.”
“This is why many people no longer share hotspots at work.”
