90% of Marriages in Nigeria Favour Men” — Podcast Debate Sparks Heated Online Reactions

A heated debate about the realities of marriage in Nigeria has gone viral after a podcast clip showed a female guest struggling to defend her claim that most marriages in the country favour men over women.

The video, now widely circulated on social media, captured a tense exchange between the woman and her male co-host as they disagreed sharply over her statement.

During the discussion, the woman boldly claimed that “90% of marriages in Nigeria favour men more than women.” However, when pressed for evidence or statistical backing, she admitted the figure was based on personal observation rather than verified data.

Her co-host immediately challenged the claim, arguing that such a sweeping generalisation required solid evidence, especially on a sensitive topic like marriage.

As the conversation intensified, both speakers began talking over each other in an increasingly emotional exchange.

Her Argument

Defending her position, the woman said men in marriage mainly carry financial responsibility, while women bear multiple burdens, including emotional and spiritual roles.

According to her, women often serve as the emotional backbone of the home and are more involved in spiritual activities such as praying for the family.

Women carry not just financial burden. They carry emotional burden… even spiritual,” she said.

His Response

Her co-host strongly disagreed, insisting that men also face emotional pressure and participate in spiritual responsibilities within the household.

He questioned her assumptions and asked why she believed men do not experience emotional strain or engage in prayer.

The discussion became more personal when he asked about her family experience, specifically which of her parents was more prayerful. After she responded that her father was more prayerful, he accused her of being inconsistent, escalating the tension further.

You’re lying because you just want to win the argument,” he said.

The clip has sparked mixed reactions across social media:
