A Fulani woman has sparked widespread conversations online after sharing claims about rising tensions between farmers and herders in parts of Nigeria, citing incidents of alleged farm destruction and confrontations.
Her remarks, posted on social media, come amid renewed concerns over clashes between farming communities and pastoralists, particularly in rural areas. These conflicts—often tied to land use, grazing routes, and resource competition—have remained a major security challenge in states like Benue State and Plateau State.
The account also referenced a reported incident linked to the Marhaba attack, where disputes between locals and herders allegedly escalated into violence, reflecting the fragile situation in affected communities.
Narrating the situation, the woman said:
“The rate at which some Fulani people are so confident is alarming. How can a Fulani man enter someone’s compound, see a beautiful tree, cut it down, and feed it to his cows? When the woman questioned him, he said ‘why not? my cows are hungry.’ She asked him to leave, he refused. Even the vigilante told him to go, he still refused, until things escalated and he was shot. That incident allegedly led to retaliation in the Marhaba attack.”
She further cited similar experiences shared by others, pointing to recurring disputes over farmland.
“A friend of mine said when he planted sweet potatoes, Fulani herders would bring their cows to eat the leaves. He fenced his house, yet they still came knocking, asking him to open the gate so their cows could feed,” she added.
Her claims echo longstanding reports of farmer–herder clashes across Nigeria, where disagreements over grazing rights and farmland boundaries have sometimes turned deadly.
Mixed and Heated Reactions Online
The video triggered a wave of strong reactions, many expressing frustration over insecurity and perceived inaction by authorities. Some comments included calls for self-defense and retaliation, highlighting the intensity of public sentiment:
“Lol una dey tolerate some rubbish oo make dem try am for my compound I’ll cut off the persons arms first for trespassing”
“At this rate if this is true, we must allow legal possession of arms for equality…”
“If a Fulani man graze his cows on your crops, never hesitate to waste the cattles…”
“The solution… start poisoning their cows…”
“It really heartbreaking the government is not doing anything about it”
