Man Calls Out Neighbour Over “Free Generator” Habit That Turned Into Entitlement

A man has stirred conversations online after sharing how an act of kindness towards his neighbour allegedly turned into a year-long burden without appreciation or support.

In a now-viral post, he explained that when he first moved into his residence, he willingly connected his neighbour to his generator, giving him access to electricity whenever it was running. According to him, the neighbour never requested the arrangement—it was purely a gesture of goodwill.

Anytime I put on my generator, I’ll call him so he can switch his changeover and use light. He never asked, I just did it out of goodwill,” he wrote.

However, what began as kindness gradually became an expectation. The man revealed that the neighbour started questioning him whenever the generator wasn’t turned on, despite never contributing fuel or offering any assistance.

His frustration grew over time, especially as he claimed the neighbour didn’t provide “even one litre of fuel” throughout the entire period.

Things escalated when he went through financial difficulties and couldn’t power the generator as often. Instead of showing understanding, the neighbour allegedly made a dismissive remark:

This one wey you never on gen for weeks, e really touch you.”

The comment, he said, felt insensitive given the circumstances.

Interestingly, the narrative shifted when a new flatmate moved in. According to the man, the newcomer immediately showed a different attitude—voluntarily contributing fuel and even providing up to 15 litres within a short time.

The contrast between both neighbours has sparked widespread reactions online. Many Nigerians emphasized the importance of gratitude and mutual support, while others warned that unchecked generosity can sometimes breed entitlement instead of appreciation.

The story has since become a talking point on social media, with users debating boundaries, kindness, and the fine line between helping others and being taken advantage of.
