Pastor Eno Jerry Eze has ignited discussions online following a sermon where she urged women to submit to their partners. Speaking to her congregation, the pastor emphasised that women should uphold respect and decorum in the presence of men.
“Anything anybody wants to tell you, let them tell you. But you see this one—submission? We must submit ourselves as women. We must!” she said.
She recounted counselling sessions where she observed women openly disrespecting their partners. “I see women, young girls, 28, 27, 32… when I’m counselling them, if you see the way they are looking at the man, if you see the disrespect in front of me… calling him a foolish man in front of me, not behind me,” Pastor Eno Jerry Eze explained.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
The pastor’s comments have drawn a wide range of responses online, reflecting the ongoing debates about gender roles in Nigeria.
Supporters:
Crespo (@PRINCIPAL_XYX) said, “She is right. Every woman must submit to her husband. It is the commandment of God.”
Chinwe Grace (@chinweowraigbo1) noted, “Mama, it’s good to submit ooo, but sometimes the husband shows no regard or love to the wife. Your hubby Pastor Jerry is intentional and has high regard for you, so no use comparing with some men.”
Critics and skeptics:
stilljoey (@theyarnshelf) asked, “If my husband want submit ko?” 😟
Crystal (@Agu_nwanyi6) pointed out, “Omo!, this is the least of our problems right now. Nigeria is burning. When we have a stable country, we will come back to this.”
ada (@adawasherelol) expressed frustration: “Do they still talk about heaven and hell again in church biko. All the time submission, submission. Christians, is that all you people talk about in church???” 😭
callmeYina (@emaluys03) said, “I have never in my life been a confrontational person… but submission will never be a part of me.”
Nuanced perspectives:
Chief & Queen (@LyfAcrosBorders) wrote, “Submission in marriage is a personal and spiritual choice, but mutual respect, love, and understanding should guide every relationship.”
Baadù (@i_am_the_ember) added a practical note: “Life is hard. People dey find food to eat, nor be this one be pesin problem abeg.”
@Mollen commented, “Na wetin Gen Z generation no wan hear be this oo 🤣🤣🤣.”
This is Hiphop (@arizzto1011) highlighted broader concerns: “The reason why marriages are destroying is because women believe they are being treated as slaves.”
The Conversation Continues
Pastor Eno Jerry Eze’s sermon has once again brought to the forefront the debate over submission, respect, and equality in relationships. While some see her advice as guidance for maintaining harmony in marriage, others view it as outdated in modern society.
The discussion online shows that Nigerian social media users remain deeply divided on what constitutes respect, love, and equality within romantic partnerships.
