A Nigerian man has sparked debate on social media after claiming that unemployment in the country may not be as widespread as many people believe.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the man revealed that he has been searching for a salesperson to help him sell okpa but has struggled to find anyone willing to take the job, despite offering what he described as a decent pay.
According to him, the position comes with a monthly salary of ₦100,000, yet several people he approached turned down the opportunity.
Expressing his frustration, he said:
“Saying there’s unemployment in Nigeria is not completely true. I’ve been looking for a sales boy to help me sell okpa, and I’m offering ₦100,000 every month, yet people keep rejecting it because they want to be ‘working boys.’”
The man further explained that he even tried to make the offer more attractive by including a long-term benefit.
“I even offered a three-year deal with a ₦3 million settlement and a bike at the end of the contract, but they still declined.”
According to him, many young people now prefer what he described as HK (Hustle Kingdom) jobs, often linked to internet fraud popularly known as “Yahoo,” instead of taking up small business opportunities that provide legitimate income.
He argued that if unemployment in Nigeria were truly as severe as people claim, job seekers would be more willing to accept such offers rather than rejecting them.
However, his comments quickly triggered mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians pointing out that other factors—such as working hours, job conditions, location, and long-term career prospects—could explain why people declined the job.
The video has since generated widespread discussion, with users sharing their opinions about the realities of employment and survival in the country.

“Honestly, this conversation shows how complicated the unemployment issue in Nigeria really is.”
@ChiomaTalks:
“Some people rejecting it might actually be students or people looking for something in their field.”
