A Nigerian lady has stirred widespread conversation on social media after sharing a personal experience about loyalty, gratitude, and trust.
The woman, who posted on X (formerly Twitter), narrated how a forgotten debt reminded her of a past act of kindness and ultimately changed her perspective on who she prefers to support financially.
According to her, she borrowed money from a male friend last year during a difficult financial period. She explained that she had promised to repay the loan within three months and eventually returned almost the entire amount when the time came.
However, a small balance remained unpaid — something she admitted she completely forgot about because it was insignificant compared to the total amount she borrowed.
Despite still exchanging occasional chats and viewing each other’s WhatsApp status updates, the man never reminded her about the outstanding balance.
Over time, both of them became busy with their daily lives and gradually stopped communicating regularly.
The matter resurfaced recently when she came across a business opportunity she believed her friend could handle well. She decided to contact him so she could refer the opportunity to him.
However, instead of opening their usual chat, she mistakenly clicked on his business WhatsApp account.
That moment turned out to be a reminder she didn’t expect.
When the chat opened, she saw the last message between them — the payment receipt she had sent earlier while repaying part of the loan.
Seeing the receipt instantly reminded her that she still owed him a small balance.
Realising the oversight, she quickly copied his bank details and transferred the remaining amount immediately. She also added extra money as a gesture of appreciation and apology for the long delay.
After making the payment, she sent him a message apologising for forgetting about the balance.
To her surprise, the man responded with excitement and gratitude.
According to her, he explained that he had also forgotten about the remaining balance.
He further revealed that years earlier, when he urgently needed money to support his business, she was the only person who helped him.
At the time, he said, no one else had come forward to assist him.
Because of that act of kindness, he had already decided that even if he later remembered the outstanding balance, he would tell her to forget about it.
Reflecting on the experience, the lady said the incident strengthened her belief in supporting men more than women.
“Not to devalue my gender but I chose to invest more in men than women,” she wrote.
Her comment quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with many users debating whether loyalty and gratitude should be tied to gender or simply individual character.
Reactions from social media users
Some users supported her perspective, saying people often remember those who helped them in difficult moments.
Others, however, argued that loyalty and gratitude are personal traits that have nothing to do with gender.
One user wrote, “Good people exist everywhere. It’s not about men or women.”
Another commented, “This simply shows both of you are good friends who value each other.”
The post continues to generate discussion online as many weigh in on whether trust and generosity should ever be generalised based on gender.
