A female doctor has shared a troubling experience that highlights the unrealistic expectations some people place on professionals — even in life-and-death situations.
According to her, she missed a phone call while performing surgery. After the procedure, she returned the call to explain why she couldn’t answer at the time. However, the response she received left her stunned.
“I know you are working but it doesn’t cost you anything to pause whatever you are doing and talk to me for me a second the same way I do whenever I call,” she recalled the caller saying.
The comment, she explained, completely overlooked the critical nature of her job and the responsibility she carries whenever she steps into the operating theatre.
“In my head, I’m like what do you mean I should put down the scalpel, unscrub, abandon a life on the table just so I can pick your call,” she said.
The doctor stressed that her professional duties — especially during surgery — cannot simply be put on hold for casual communication. For healthcare professionals, every second can be vital, and even a brief distraction could have serious consequences.
She added that the incident reflects a broader misunderstanding of the demands placed on medical workers. Long hours, high-pressure environments, and life-or-death decisions are part of their daily routine — and they deserve understanding and respect for the boundaries required to do their jobs safely.
