A Nigerian lady has ignited heated debate online after claiming that men who can cook and handle household chores are “red flags” in romantic relationships.
According to her, such men often avoid commitment and are unlikely to formalise relationships through marriage. She argued that men who are self-sufficient domestically tend to discourage long-term dependence from their partners and may use it as a reason to walk away when marriage discussions arise.
Speaking in a viral video, she said:
“Any man wey sabi cook na red flag o. Man wey sabi cook ogbono soup, egusi soup, rice and stew, jollof rice and you dey inside that kin relationship with that guy? He no go marry you. If you try to talk, he’ll tell you dey go. Wetin you sabi wey I no sabi. Man wey sabi wash hin cloth, auntie na red flag o. You dey on your own. He no go ever marry you o.”
Her remarks quickly triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some users supported her view, arguing that men should prioritise career growth and financial stability over domestic skills, others strongly disagreed.
Critics described her claims as outdated and misleading, pointing to numerous examples of married men who cook, clean, and actively support their partners at home while maintaining committed relationships.
The discussion has once again brought gender roles, expectations, and evolving relationship dynamics in modern Nigerian society into the spotlight.
