“People Cheat Just to Be Free”: Nigerian Man’s Claim About Jehovah’s Witness Marriage Rules Sparks Online Debate

A Nigerian man has ignited heated discussions on social media after sharing a controversial claim about marriage and divorce practices within the Jehovah’s Witness faith.

In a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), the man alleged that members of the religious group are only permitted to divorce their spouses on grounds of infidelity. According to him, issues such as domestic abuse, emotional neglect, or irreconcilable differences are not considered valid reasons for divorce under the church’s doctrine.

He further claimed that this strict stance has produced troubling consequences, with some members allegedly resorting to adultery simply to qualify for what the church recognizes as an “approved” divorce.

It’s crazy, but some people literally commit adultery to get a divorce they’re otherwise forbidden from having,” he wrote.

The revelation quickly attracted mixed reactions online. While some users expressed shock and concern over what they described as harsh and unrealistic rules, others strongly disputed the claim, insisting it was false or exaggerated.

Church and strict rules, it is well,” one user commented.

Another fired back, “This is a fat lie, so untrue.”

Despite the pushback, the man maintained his position, concluding that Jehovah’s Witness divorce rules are far stricter than many outsiders realize. He argued that, in some situations, these rigid guidelines may unintentionally push members to violate the very moral standards they are expected to uphold.

As the debate continues, the post has reopened broader conversations about religion, marriage, personal freedom, and how rigid doctrines can affect real-life relationships.
