An 81-year-old Ghanaian man, Mr. Joseph Aheto, has inspired many after successfully earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Mr. Aheto graduated during the 9th session of UCC’s 58th congregation held in December 2025, a ceremony described as both emotional and deeply inspiring. The milestone became even more historic as his son, Professor Denis Aheto—currently the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC—was part of the congregation.
Expressing his joy, Mr. Aheto said, “I feel very much excited to have my own son graduating me today.”
The achievement marks a remarkable continuation of his academic journey. Mr. Aheto previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana in 1978. Several decades later, he made the bold decision to return to the classroom to further his education.
According to him, the motivation came when he realized that both of his sons had become professors and were academically ahead of him. Rather than feeling discouraged, he embraced it as a challenge and enrolled in the MBA programme in 2022.
He also clarified that his admission into the programme occurred long before his son assumed any leadership role at UCC.
Returning to school at his age was not without challenges. Mr. Aheto recalled being mocked by some younger students who questioned why an elderly man would still pursue higher education. Despite this, he remained focused and determined.
“But that didn’t deter me. I soldiered on, and now I have graduated,” he said confidently.
His story stands as a powerful reminder that learning has no age limit and that determination can triumph over doubt and ridicule.
