“Men are the ones setting high standards for each other” – Lady says

A Nigerian woman has ignited intense debate online after sharing her views on why relationship standards among women have risen, placing the responsibility squarely on men.

In a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) and shared by @honest30bgfan, the lady argued that women did not arbitrarily raise their expectations in dating. According to her, men themselves created those standards through their actions.

Men are the ones who set high standards for other men,” she said. “I once met a man who paid for my meal and also sent me ₦500,000 that same day.”

She explained that the man went beyond just taking her out, choosing to show exceptional generosity on the very day they met.

Based on that experience, she questioned why she should be expected to lower her expectations in future relationships.

Do you expect me to settle for less after that?” she asked.

Her remarks quickly sparked mixed reactions online. While some users criticized such expectations as unrealistic, others defended her stance.

One commenter wrote, “This is why dating is hard now,” while another added, “Once you see better, it’s hard to go back.”

The discussion has once again reignited conversations around money, dating expectations, and realism in modern relationships, with many agreeing that personal experiences often shape standards—whether fairly or not.
