A Nigerian man has stirred intense debate on social media after claiming that women living in major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Owerri, Asaba, and Port Harcourt have slim chances of getting married unless they relocate.
The controversial opinion, shared online, quickly gained traction and sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians across different platforms.
According to the man, urban centres are not favourable environments for women seeking marriage. He argued that women who genuinely want to settle down must be willing to leave these cities and move to other states.
“As a lady, you can’t be staying in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri, Asaba, or Port Harcourt and say you want to get married,” he wrote. “If you want to get married, you have to change state.”
The statement immediately went viral, with many users questioning the logic behind linking marriage prospects to location in modern-day Nigeria. While some agreed with his perspective, citing lifestyle choices and career priorities in big cities, others strongly disagreed, describing the claim as outdated and unfair.
The remark has since fueled broader conversations around societal expectations, women’s independence, career ambitions, and the evolving nature of relationships in urban areas.
As reactions continue to pour in, the debate highlights the growing divide in opinions on marriage, gender roles, and city living in contemporary Nigerian society.
