A woman has sparked online debate after revealing that her ex-husband is demanding child maintenance from her after taking full-time custody of their children, despite previously being the one ordered by the court to pay support.
According to the woman, her ex-husband informed her early last week that he would be caring for their sons full time while she prepares to relocate.
Following that decision, he stopped the child maintenance payments that had been agreed upon during their divorce.
She explained that the money was never meant to support her personally but was strictly used for the children’s extracurricular activities.
“That money was for their breakfast club, after-school club, tutoring, athletics and football,” she said, adding that it did not cover rent or food.
The woman stated that she had no issue with the payments stopping once the children were no longer in her care.
“That was absolutely fine, no questions asked,” she said.
However, the situation reportedly took an unexpected turn when her ex-husband demanded that she start paying him child maintenance.
“He literally repeated himself,” she said, expressing shock at the request.
She explained that her financial situation had changed significantly and questioned how she was expected to begin making such payments.
“It’s not like I have the financial security or pulling power I had before,” she said.
She also disclosed that her ex-husband reclaimed a car that had previously been provided to transport the children, a move she said she accepted without argument.
The woman added that she later received an email from a mediation service stating that her ex-husband had instructed them to begin proceedings. She said she declined the request.
“I’m not mediating over paying child maintenance when I paid for the entire divorce,” she said.
Her father reportedly dismissed the demand, advising her to ignore it and saying he had “never heard of men getting money off women” in such a situation.
The incident has since generated mixed reactions online, with many people sharing differing views on the matter.
One user, @uncle_retired, wrote: “I thought you wanted equal right? Well equal means dealing with both sides. Not just the one that benefits you.”
Another user, @ladygray312, said: “Yes I do think, based on her income, that she should pay child support.”
@beltonebrad commented: “Well if he’s having them full time and he’s paying all their expenses and those expenses were court ordered to pay for those expenses, then he doesn’t owe you a freaking dime.”
Another reaction from @arizzto1011 read: “Don’t you like equality again?”
Meanwhile, @ken04240867 added: “This is part of feminism as well, though women seem shocked by it. They only want equality when it benefits them.”
The discussion continues to generate debate online, with some people arguing that child support should depend on who has custody of the children, while others believe the situation raises broader questions about fairness and financial responsibility after divorce.
