A grieving woman has publicly accused her late sister’s husband of sexual abuse, claiming the alleged assault led to the new mother’s death just days after she gave birth.
According to the account shared online, the deceased had undergone a caesarean section and was still battling severe pain four days after delivery when her husband allegedly forced her to have sex despite medical advice to allow her body time to heal.
The woman’s sister said the victim begged for more time to recover but was reportedly threatened with abandonment if she refused.
“She told him she was still in pain and needed at least two weeks, but he refused,” the sister alleged.
The deceased reportedly got married in 2021 and had five children — three boys and two girls — within four years. Family members claimed she never spoke openly about the alleged abuse, choosing instead to endure in silence in order to “save her marriage.”
According to the sister, the situation worsened on the night of the incident when the husband allegedly had sex with her multiple times despite her fragile condition.
Hours later, the woman reportedly began bleeding heavily and had to be rushed to the hospital. That was when family members were contacted.
“When I got there, she was weak, crying, and struggling to speak,” the elder sister recounted.
The heartbreaking story has sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians drawing attention to issues surrounding marital sexual violence, the dangers women face during postpartum recovery, and societal pressure on women to endure abuse to preserve their marriages.
Advocacy groups have since called on women to prioritise their health and safety, urging victims of abuse to speak out regardless of marital status.
The incident has also renewed calls for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women from domestic and sexual violence.
