Why Virginity Isn’t Everything: A Nigerian Man’s Hard-Learned Lesson on Character in Relationships

A Nigerian man recently sparked an intense online debate after sharing a painful relationship experience that completely reshaped his perspective on marrying a virgin woman. His story, widely shared across social media, challenges a notion that has long been deeply ingrained in many cultures: that virginity is a reliable measure of a woman’s worth or character.

According to the man, his second serious relationship was with a woman who described herself as a virgin. The couple dated for six months, and everything seemed stable and promising. But trouble began shortly after they decided to live together.

Within just two months, the relationship started to unravel under the weight of financial stress and personal challenges. His partner fell seriously ill, and with both of them struggling financially, he drained his savings—money he had earmarked for a major project—to pay for her treatment. She recovered, but he was left broke, stressed, and racing against deadlines.

Instead of empathy, he claimed she accused him of neglecting her emotionally. For three days, she allegedly cooked only for herself and ate alone while he stayed hungry under the same roof. When he confronted her about the situation, she reportedly left the house one night and returned the next morning acting as if nothing had happened.

Trusting his instincts, he checked her phone—and what he discovered nearly shattered him. She had gone to another man’s house and had sex while they were supposed to be together. Despite the betrayal, he tried to forgive her and repair the relationship, but the situation escalated. He recounted that when he confronted her, she grabbed his shirt, screamed, and created a scene that drew a crowd, eventually involving her mother.

Her mother later called him, warning him to stay away from her daughter. That was the final collapse of the relationship. About a year later, both the woman and her mother reportedly returned, begging him to rekindle the relationship. He refused, and to this day, her mother still asks him, “My son, so you and my pikin no fit fix things?” His response is simple: he smiles and walks away.

Reflecting on the experience, the man made a powerful point: virginity is no guarantee of good character. “If a virgin comes by, good,” he said. “But character matters a thousand times more.” He concluded with a caution for anyone who judges potential partners solely by sexual history:

If your only filter is virginity, best of luck to you. I’m good.”

His story resonates because it highlights a hard truth: relationships are about compatibility, trust, and character—not just a person’s past. It’s a reminder that what really matters is how someone treats you, especially when life gets difficult.
