Nollywood actress, Ufuoma McDermott speaks out on her challenging 12-year journey with chronic kidney disease, which she says has taken her close to death on several occasions.
The 43-year-old actress disclosed that her illness, which was first diagnosed at stage three, had advanced to stage four in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
McDermott described the physical toll her illness has taken on her, her battle to control her weight, and how gaining weight puts her life in jeopardy.
“People do not understand when I say I cannot afford to put on weight; I do not want to die. I have little children. I had pushed my body, and it was borderline stage 4,” she stated.
She described last year as particularly difficult, with moments where she feared for her life. Recalling a terrifying discussion with her physician, McDermott revealed that she was adamant about keeping her appointments even though her doctor had advised her to take it easy.
“I was negotiating with the doctor; she said, ‘I need you to go home and rest.’ But I was like, ‘What if I go home? I promise you I will sleep today, before I leave tomorrow,’” she recounted.
McDermott also disclosed that although her doctor changed her prescription to help control her blood pressure, she was determined to keep working, so she went back to the set.
