A tragic road accident along the heavily trafficked Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of two people, barely eight days after former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed bout in Miami.
The incident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday when a black Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua collided with a stationary commercial truck.
According to reports, the Lexus SUV crashed into a red Sinotruck that was parked by the roadside. A video circulating online shows the 35-year-old former heavyweight world champion being rescued from the wreckage, visibly injured but alive.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the crash in an official statement signed by its Assistant Corps Marshal and Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The FRSC disclosed that the accident involved two vehicles: a black Lexus Jeep with registration number KRD 850 HN (private) and a stationary red Sinotruck with an unknown registration number. A total of five adult males were involved in the crash.
“Two persons sadly lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries,” the statement read.
The injured victim was immediately evacuated for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was also notified for further investigation and necessary documentation.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC revealed that the Lexus SUV was suspected to be travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit. The vehicle reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake and rammed into the stationary truck.
The FRSC identified excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as the primary causes of the crash, describing them as major traffic violations and leading contributors to fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.
Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.
The FRSC further reiterated its warning to motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, and disregard for traffic regulations, especially on high-speed routes such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Motorists were urged to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and prioritise safety over haste, particularly during the festive travel period.
