A Nigerian woman, Aishatu Umar, has died under heartbreaking circumstances, four months after surgeons allegedly left a pair of scissors inside her stomach during a medical procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center, Kano State.
Aishatu, a mother of five, reportedly underwent surgery at the facility in September 2025. According to her family, she began experiencing severe and persistent abdominal pain shortly after the operation. Despite returning to the hospital multiple times to complain about her worsening condition, she was allegedly only given painkillers, with no comprehensive medical investigations carried out.
For four months, Aishatu endured intense pain. It was only two days before her death that doctors finally conducted proper tests and scans, which reportedly revealed a shocking discovery — a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside her abdomen during the initial surgery.
Following the discovery, her family rushed her back to the hospital for an emergency corrective surgery to remove the object. Sadly, Aishatu passed away during the operation in the early hours of Sunday, January 11, 2026. Family members believe the prolonged presence of the scissors in her body significantly contributed to her death.
Confirming the incident on Facebook, her brother-in-law, Abubakar Mohammed, expressed grief and outrage over what he described as gross medical negligence.
“The woman you see here is Aishatu Umar. She was a sister-in-law to me. She passed away yesterday around 1:00 AM. She is survived by her husband and five children,” he wrote.
He recounted how she repeatedly sought help after the surgery but was allegedly dismissed with pain relievers until the fatal discovery was made months later.
“Is this not pure negligence? Truly, every soul has its appointed time, but how can professional doctors forget scissors inside a patient?” he asked.
Abubakar further called on the Kano State Government and relevant health authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure accountability, stressing that such an error not only cost a life but also undermines public trust in the healthcare system.
The tragic death of Aishatu Umar has since sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians demanding justice for her family and stricter oversight of medical practices in public health facilities.
