The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, situated in Awka, Anambra State, has been formally dissolved by President Bola Tinubu.
Additionally, Tinubu gave his approval to the dismissal of the university’s registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Nwokike, and the new vice chancellor, Prof. Bernard Odoh.
This was announced in an Abuja statement on Wednesday by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy.
According to Onanuga, the council was headed by Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe and consisted of Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin, Augustine Onyedebelu, Mr. Amioleran Osahon, and Hafiz Oladejo.
He claimed that the governing council and its officials were fired in response to allegations that the council had unlawfully appointed an unfit vice-chancellor without following the proper procedures.
Additionally, he stated that following the contentious appointment, the Federal Government intervened to resolve conflicts between the 33-year-old university’s Senate and governing council.
According to the presidential aide, the government was concerned about the council’s selection process, which seemed to disregard the university’s governing laws.
According to Onanuga, Tinubu also gave his approval for Mr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami to be removed from his position as Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Health Sciences’ governing council in Otukpo, Benue state.
According to him, the decision was made in response to Salami’s unlawful acts, which included suspending the vice chancellor without following the correct procedures.
Salami refused to comply, according to Onanuga, even after the Federal Ministry of Education demanded that the illegal suspension be lifted.
Rather, he turned to threatening and abusive behavior against the Permanent Secretary and other directors of the Ministry.
”The Federal Government reiterated that the primary responsibility of university councils is to ensure the smooth operation of university activities in accordance with the act establishing each university.
”Tinubu warned the councils not to create distractions in their universities as his government is focused on improving the country’s education standards,” Onanuga said.
