TikTok Chat Turns Costly as Nigerian Man Loses ₦13k to Alleged Scam

A Nigerian man has shared how a brief TikTok conversation turned into an expensive lesson after he allegedly lost ₦13,000 to a woman he met online.

In a viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by user @mazi_chinonso, the man explained that he met the lady on TikTok, where she complained on their first day of chatting that she had no data to continue the conversation.

Out of goodwill, he requested her phone number and bought data for her, after which they continued chatting on WhatsApp.

According to him, things escalated quickly. The man, who said he was based in Owerri, invited the lady to visit him. She agreed, but requested transport money.

“I asked her how much, she said ₦8,000. I sent ₦10,000,” he said.

Moments later, the lady claimed she had arrived at the park and even sent a ‘view once’ video as proof. She then asked for an additional ₦3,000, bringing the total amount sent to ₦13,000.

After that, communication stopped.

From that day till now, she has not replied my messages,” the man lamented.

The story has since sparked widespread reactions online, with many users warning against sending money to people met on social media. One user commented, “Anytime ‘transport money’ enters the chat, just know you’re in danger.” Another added, “₦13k for lesson no bad — some people paid more.”
