The mother of Nigerian music star Ayra Starr has opened up about why she chose to cut off some longtime friends, a revelation that has sparked widespread discussion online.
In a viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), she explained that her decision was driven by repeated boundary violations and emotional exhaustion.
According to her, one of the friendships ended after she noticed that a friend routinely shared their private conversations with her husband almost immediately after they spoke.
“I told my husband, and he said it was okay. But why would you share what we discussed with your husband? Do I even know him?” she asked.
She said the behaviour made her deeply uncomfortable, as she could not understand why personal discussions between friends were being relayed to someone she barely knew. That incident, she revealed, was the moment she stopped taking the friend’s calls.
She also recounted another friendship that ended because the friend’s husband frequently interfered in their relationship. She described the situation as inappropriate and unsettling, noting that having a third party involved in personal matters between friends eventually pushed her to distance herself completely.
In another instance, she spoke about a friend who constantly complained about her marriage despite being married for over 20 years. She explained that the persistent negativity became mentally draining and that she could no longer carry the emotional burden of someone else’s unresolved marital issues.
Her comments quickly divided opinions online. While some social media users praised her for prioritising her mental health and setting firm boundaries, others felt she may have been too strict, arguing that friendships require patience and understanding.
For Ayra Starr’s mother, however, friendship must be built on trust, respect, and emotional safety, and cutting off those who threatened her peace was a necessary choice.
