At the 2024 BET Awards, which took place on Sunday night at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater, Nigerian singer Tems was declared the winner.
The Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award went to Tems’ hit song “Me & U,” defeating giants in the industry like Maverick City, Kirk Franklin, and Shirley Caesar.
Other Nigerian artistes, however, faced tough competition at this year’s BET Awards. Ayra Starr and Asake lost the Best International Act to South Africa’s Tyla.
Starr also missed out on Best New Artist and BET Her, both of which were won by Tyla and Victoria Monét, respectively.
Seyi Vibez was outperformed by South Africa’s Makhadzi in the Best New International Act category. Burna Boy, another prominent Nigerian nominee, was defeated by Usher for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and by Kendrick Lamar for Best Hip-Hop Artist.
